Question 1

What is mandi?

Accepted Answer

Mandi is a rice and meat dish that comes from Yemen, usually made with chicken or lamb served over fragrant spiced rice. Traditionally, the meat cooks in an enclosed space above the rice, so the juices and spices drip down and flavor the rice. It's tender, comforting, and usually served family style.

Question 2

Is mandi the same as biryani?

Accepted Answer

No, though they're related. Biryani is layered with a bold masala and finished in sealed steam, while mandi is generally milder, with the meat and rice cooked together and often served with a fresh salad. Both are hearty rice dishes, but they taste and feel different, so it's fun to try one after the other.

Question 3

What comes with a mandi plate?

Accepted Answer

It usually centers on the meat and the rice, often with a fresh salad, and sometimes sauces or chutneys. Because the sides vary from restaurant to restaurant, it's a good idea to ask what comes with your order before you decide what else to add to the table, such as a starter or a drink.

Question 4

Can I order mandi online?

Accepted Answer

You can order Indian food online for pickup, but since mandi items are listed among the specials, check the online menu to see what's available when you order. If you're unsure, a quick call to the restaurant can confirm what's available that day, so you can plan your order without any surprises.
